How Green Are Your Blue Jeans ?

Most of us won't even consider where or how are jeans were made. If they look good and fit nicely we're going to buy them. So how green are your blue jeans? The chances are, even if you wanted to know, you will not be able to find any information about this side to your jeans. Most jeans are made in developing countries, with few environmental controls and restrictions. Dyes, residues and waste are pumped into the local rivers and streams. Ethics are questionable too, with many factories employing children and other cheap sources of labour. I wonder how many designers / big brands even take the time to visit their production facilities to see how their garments are made? Perhaps they should - it may change the whole way they think about their products! But not all brands are bad - take Dorinha Jeans Wear for example. since their launch back in 2001, Dorinha, the designer, has paid close attention to her chosen production plants ensuring that not only are the jeans made in an environmentally friendly manner, but the staff employed at these plants are treated fairly. It would be nice if more manufacturers followed her example.
